The Journey Home

Hey all,
It's getting to the point of returning home. I am very much looking forword to leaving India. The last few days have seemed so long. I want a warm shower and a nice big bed with warm loving arms wrapped around me. The shala closed yesterday, most of us took today (Thursday) off from practicing and then on Friday and Sarurday we will practice on our own.  Then I will go see Iron Maiden with my friends James and Jules, leave Bangalore on the 18 and start my train ride up North to Delhi. I fly out of Delhi Tuesday night at 10:45. I'm not sure of my exact arrival time.
I do not have much to add. I think I've documented most of the exciting things that have happened to me on this trip. Sharath told me I need to come back two more times, three months each, in order to be authorized. My plan will be to return in December of '07, do a workshop with Sharath in Goa and then go to Mysore for the next couple of months.
This has been an extremely productive experience. I feel like I've learned a ton from Sharath, Guriji and Saraswati. Everyday was a learning experience. From yoga, to the socializing, to personal time. I hope it carries over to my home life in the most productive way. Notice Pattabhi's shirt in the picture of us,"Bad Man".
Thank you , I hope you found this interesting.
                                                      Love, Chuck

Holi Birthday

Friday was my thirty-fifth birthday and I have to say it was the most celebrated one so far. I woke up at 2:30 in the morning and went to the shala at 4:35 to practice led primary at 5am but the room was totally full. People were in the waiting room outside the Shala and in the dressing rooms doing their pratice. I left with a friend and he bought me a coffee for my birthday and then we went back to the Shala for the 6:30 class. I did not think there would be many people but the room was full again due to the fact that all of Sharath's students were in the main Shala as well. This time I got a spot. When I returned home, my birthday card from my mom had just arrived, talk about timing. After some friends took me out for breakfeast and then I did a few massages and then more friends took me out to this great lunch buffet. Pasta, salad, soup and much more. Really good. After all of this I had two other groups of friends and then I went to a going away party. I was surprised when they had cake for me and sang happy birthday to me. Afer all of this excitement was the Peies celebration at this guy Luiz's place. An incredible party, the music was fantastic, the lights were spectacular and there was even fire works. I wonder who he paid off for this?
Holi is a celebration where they trough all sorts of colors all over your body. I do not know why but it is kind of fun but looks more fun then it is. I think it is much bigger up North and more people celebrate it and there is more of a party atmostphere. Anyway I used this celebration for my decorative party atire yesterday. I looked pretty cool, all purple and orange and turquise and yellow. I enjoyed they way people would look at me while they were talking to me. Amazed that I was this purple looking being. Unfortunately I cleaned up early because I hit my had on a door frame and busted it open. I was amazed with how hard the impact was abd the feact I saw a white flash of light and thn I was lying on my back rolling from side to side. I finally piked myself up and that is when the blood started to pour down my face. I did get a little freaked because of the amount of blood but I think I am ok now. I do have a couple of photos if anyone are to see. It is pretty awesome looking with the colored powders and the blood running down my face. I do not know if it is for all to see. On my final head stand I kept my head off the groung and just balanced on my arms. I skipped the last seven head stands at the end of intermediate, other then that I felt fine. I may need to lay off my head for a little while.
                                                         peace, Chuck

Life at the Shala

Just a little over two weeks left. I'm starting to miss home more and more. The social excitement is beginning to wear off and practice is starting to kick my ass. Two weeks ago Sharath told me to eat only one meal a day, after telling me I was too fat for the second time. Being the good yoga student I am, I listened to my teacher and I've lost around ten pounds, my asana's have really improved but I've been feeling really wiped out. Usually around twelve pm I take a three hour nap. I am not encouraging this, it's just what has been happening. I do not feel as strong as I did in the beginning but my form and transitions are more correct then when I started. So now Sharah says only my leg is too fat. My left leg to be exact. Good thing I'm not too sensitive or am I?
It's hard to get across what I'm actually experiencing. The fatigue and lack of external strength is forcing me to work more internal, align my body properly and work slower and more precise. Udyana banda is starting to naturally occur rather then something I'm trying to create, the internal rotation of the femer bones is necessary for all transitions and lifts, and my breath is getting to be more natural rather than something I'm working on. I believe strongly in Sharath's teachings and will continue to follow his guidance. I wish I could get my hands on some blue green algae. I can already see where my diet will lead me once I get home. I wish I could grab a coffee before class. I know I would not feel the lack of strength then. I have not even been drinking tea in the mornings, sometimes a glass of water but thats all.
Yesterday(Sunday) Guruji fell asleep during our led intermediate class. This is not an unusual occurance but the places he did fall asleep in were tourture. We must have been in kappotasana for twenty breaths. This I believe was intentional and for myself not too unbearable but when he makes you hold the lift afterwords before jumping back it is pretty challenging. Then he kept us in myurasana for about twelve breaths. At this point in the led class our bodies have been thoroughly worked, people were beginning to fall out of it. I am proud to say it was one of my better days and I kept it the full time but then he fell asleep afterwords while we were in chataranga. Now talk about tourture, every muscle burning, trying to keep proper alignment and stay lifted through the legs and stomach. No wonder I am so beat today. I'm actually starting to feel much stronger after writing this. Maybe I should go for a hike? Just joking, I need to rest still but not until I've had a couple chai's.
                                          peace,
                                          Chuck

Yoga Soul Cafe

You all know me as the yoga practitioner and massage therapist. You also know me as a less then part time DJ and part time cook with a much larger passion for food and music then I can express. You may also know me as a person setting out to explore new places and gather as much experiences in life that I can in this lifetime. But only a small group of you know that complete combination. My complete self. Maybe I can call it perfectyourself yoga. But I chose Yogi Soul Cafe`. You may call me "Yogi Soul" if you like.

I had a party last Thursday night just for the sake of putting one together and seeing how it would turn out. I have this Indian friend that I met here named Umesh and he like the idea and helped put it together with me. Within two days we turned an ordinary Gokulam house into an Indian disco tech. With a full tent on the roof, blue satin draped that rippled from ten feet above the ground to the floor which had this rope mat and mattresses and bolsters for sitting or lying on. We were high on a hill which had a beautiful view of a valley. The tent was lit up with large white Christmas lights and the valley was lit up from the houses. The DJ in the corner was lit by a flashing blue strobe light. Full bar with imported wine from New Zealand and South Africa and Australian beer. Then thirty or more people came and paid 300 RS for my food.  Most of the food went, I made way too much soup and went a little too heavy on the grains but the salad and vegetables were gone.  Here is the menu we enjoyed:

·         Watermelon Gazpacho Soup w/ pepper, onion & organic white pepper corns

·         Organic Salad; lettuce, spinach, cilantro, dill w/tomato, cucumber, mushrooms, sprouted garbanzo beans, fresh parmesan and black olives w/ lemon oil and salt

·         Ginger  Cabbage w/ nappa, red cabbage and carrots

·         Caramelized Beets

·         Red Rice and Couscous w/ cilantro, sliced almonds, raisins, black sesame seeds, organic black pepper corns, cloves and fennel seeds w/ lemon oil

·         Fruit Salad w/ papaya, pineapple, banana, black and green grapes, pomegranate mixed with a blended mint cream

·         And I can't forget the coconut guys serving fresh coconut water

The party was a success, lots of dancing. Maybe fifty or more showed up to celebrate. I had a sparing battle on the dance floor with my friend Jesse from Santa Cruz. I'm trying to get a copy of the video. I would love to see it myself and if it's not too embarrassing, I'll share it. She kind of kicked my ass but in all fairness she was not drinking and well you know me. My party, my scene, my expertise. I may try one again on March 2, to celebrate my 35 birthday. Only I will get a professional sound system. That was the only problem with the party; the music was not loud enough. But on the positive side we had no trouble with the law and everyone was home by 1am.

Peace, Chuck

Mysore Riots

Whats new in Mysore,
For starters there have been riots going on due to this water strike affecting two states. Bikes are being set on fire and people are just acting nuts. The whole city was closed yesterday, no way to get around, no shops opened for business at all. The coconut stand opened around 4:30.  For some reason the strike was over at that time but none of the other tea stalls were open for business. So everyone was coming out to get cocnuts, cigaretts and chai but there was no chai because nobody had any milk. that's where I come in. During my journey earlier in the day, I spotted a shop hidden down a side road. A little light bulb went off inside my head. Only instead of a bulb, it was a bag of milk. I scored several bags, plus some kick ass chocolate, and brought it back to the coconut stand. Since most places stayed closed, the chai flew out of there. We had to make a second run for four more bags. I felt like a bootlegger, the best addreneline rush since I've been here. Chai, the Indian crack.
Now things are back to normal but the states are still fighting over the water supply. Class remained the same, Guruji has been adjusting me in my backbends on certain days and Sharath still tells me to loose some weight. He suggested eating one meal a day. That will be hard but I will most likely aim for it on certain days. I felt strong and light today and none of my asana's were difficult. If it wasn't for those blasted weekends I would be fine. Food is the enemy; only joking.  I'm eating fine with the family I'm staying with. Last week I fasted for two days.  They seemed bewildered as to why I would not want to eat for two days. I just felt like doing it. I had this stomach cleanse occured last Sunday. For a week my stomach was on fire. I talked to Sharath about it and all he said was, "it's good". You really have to appreciate the simplification of communication in the shala. So for a week everyday after practice my stomach was on fire and then we had a long weekend where we went to the Golden Temple and the led intermediate class on Sunday. All weekend my stomach was fine until after practice on Sunday and a few hours after I felt it drop and I ran home with my butt check clinched very tight. Made it home and to the Indian toilet, which is a hole in the ground with a bucket of water for cleaning. I've been fine ever since. No more burning stomach and most of my asana's have improved as result. You may be saying, "thanks for sharing" I say,"your welcome" if you are saying something else, too bad. Live and breathe the experience, even if it stinks.
                                    Love Chuck
